"Caustic at high temperature"

Question:

"What is the relative performance of Alloy 200 (nickel), Inconel 600, and Hastelloy (B-2, C-276?) in 20-80% NaOH at temperatures between 50°C and 180°C?"

Answer:

You posed a complicated question and one not easily answered without a detailed review of the literature. Generally, nickel 200 is considered the premier alloy for handling agressive caustic solutions within the nickel and nickel alloy family. However, depending on the specific environment, both alloys 600 and 400 (Monel) also provide excellent resistant to high-temperature caustic. Less data is available for alloys B-2 and C-276 as they are generally not used in caustic service.
