Technical Frequently Asked Questions

"Inspection of BFW coils in ethylene furnace"

Question:

"We are experiencing metal loss in non-finned areas of BFW coils of ethylene furnace, which are placed in convection section. is there any inspection technique to measure/ monitor the thickness of finned areas of the coil, other than cutting/ rremoving the tube from convection header box?"

Answer:

Depending on the configuration of the finned tubes, you might consider boroscope inspection. Ultrasonic wall thickness (IRIS) inspection may also be a possibility, depending on the diameter of the tubes. Finned BFW tubes are difficult to inspect and you may have to sacrifice one or two properly selected ones.
