Technical Frequently Asked Questions

"heat treating SS 316 L"

Question:

"We manufacture ss 316 L bearing balls. What should be the temperature for solution annealing. More important, does it have to be done in a nuetral atmosphere, or having methanol or acetone is Okay. Is passivation necessary after annealing as with methanol a carbon layer forms on surface of ball leading to failure in salt spray test? "

Answer:

A common solution annealing temperature for 316SS is approximately 1950F. It is difficult to answer your question regarding the need to passivate after solution annealing, based on lack of knowledge regarding specification and customer requirements.
